Okay, so here's the thing--this is an album that is composed by the three members of Green Day and released under the Green Day moniker, but outside of the title track, the album isn't really a Green Day album. With Green Day albums, you can hit shuffle and still be happy with the results. With Green Day albums, you can listen to one song on repeat over and over again without any regard to the other dozen or so tracks. Aah American Idiot. This is the album that got me into music, really I couldn't dislike it if I wanted too. People got their reasons for being sour. That just seems a shame to me since I enjoyed every second of it, but I see where they're coming from. I know that people are gunna jump all over this, but I'll say it anyway. Green Day is an amazing band. Billie Joe is a great songwriter and I love how his lyrics are so straight foward. And to all you Green Day haters: I guess you'll never get this, but us GD fans don't care what you say!! It's not like we're gunna stop liking the band just because you think they suck. Neva' eva'. P. S. This album is the best. The album is pretty mediocre. I mean I did like the title track despite, that it really isn't all that cool to admit and I hate overly Liberal songs, and Holiday was catchy enough. idk my bff jill. The album that got me into Punk Rock. Sure, you can throw around "poser" accusations like the good little clone elitist you are. Or you can appreciate the fact that they're an honest, fun band that plays fast powerpop with good lyrics. not a big fan of this album. it got so much publicity because its a "political" album. But its incredibly watered down so that it doesnt offend anyone with a different political view. Bad religion, pennywise, even Anti flag do a far better job of making political music but Green day just stole all the glory. plus the only song i really like is whatshername. the rest of this album doesnt interest me very much. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWWW I enjoyed this album thourghly. This album gains extra points due to the fact that it's Green Day producing an epic masterpiece. I loved it. Gah! People get the hell over yourselves. Really If you didnt like it just say you didnt. But to rant and rave about an album you didnt like for a good five minutes your just wasting your own time. Or maybe not. You guys probably have time to waste anyways. GREEN DAY IS AWESOME. This album is a complete work of shit. I actually shouldn't say that because shit is better than this. anyone who owns this record should torture themselves and then proceed to commit suicide because you fucking deserve it. terrible all i can say is AWSOME!!!! This is dsa best band in da whole entire world I LOVE U BILLIE JOE!!!! Paul McPike, you've written a masterpiece. omg...all i can say is OMG!! Who? Saw them twice last year great show. It wasnt just 13 year olds in the crowd either. I saw plenty of age groups there. Whats the differance between billy wearing make up and danzig you suck/ no one likes you do you get that yet... Atleast they're better than NOFX's so called political album "War On Errorism", jeez... By the way, their message sucks! they fucking suck. This album fucking rocks, and some dude down there alleges that they stole some riff by 2 bands.. Oh yeah one more thing, This album, totally blew me away, and i disagree with the "Rock and Roll Girlfriend" part in Homecoming being bad, it was actually funny...and u guyz are way to serious abt stuff... Not my favourite, but still a monumental album. Might not be punk, it's debatable, but then again, what isn't debatable these days. This album is a catelyst to the new generation of kids. Talk about sparking a revolution of hearts and minds. I hate this CD; not because Greenday sucks. But they have gone behind all of our backs to represent something that we devote, to another audience that just likes the sound; not the message But you gotta think, all the people saying that they are sold out or mainstream now, they probably dont know what Dookie is, and surely not Kerplunk and 39/Smooth. dude greenday has been mainstream even since dookie and greenday always will be mainstream, but as far as i can tel thier the only band tht can deal w/ tht kinda popularity and still maintain teh punk rock sound, life and additude, w/o becomeing some kinda of fake rich tightass wanna bes For all those who have a thing against Green Day because they've apparently 'sold out' with American Idiot, you should know that they practically sold out when Dookie came out (people were holding up green banners with dollar signs on them at Dookie concerts) so there isn't much else to it, they were royally mainstream when the brilliant Dookie came out, yet you accuse them of becoming mainstream ten years after Dookie, when they make something different. this is a kik arse album altho i prefer there earlier stuff more. this was a good cd wen i first bought it then every single one of thier good songs became way overplayed u hear them on like every radio station then u only like the song for a few weeks good music shouldnt b like that..... i thought i would like this cd, but the radio stations just kept playing thier songs over and over again. So i got the cd it sucked i hate i never listen to them. Great. An hour of dirge for fratboys and pseudo-intellectual 14 year-olds to digest and be content with 'sticking it to the Man'. The problem with greenday is they are hoplessly devoted to the underground mesage, yet the sell out and appear on mtv. first off. american idiot is pretty much a joke. green day has become so mainstream thanks to mtv who kills all artists. i cant even turn on the tv without seeing a fucking green day video. i must admit that green day's older music was better, of course but since american idiot, green day has never been the same, with caring too much about this shit and becoming the most overplayed band ever. they think they can bring back punk which offically died in the 80s and you cant bring back something once it's gone. there's kids going around thinking their hardcore because they listen to green day. it's bullshit. im not trying to act like i know everything.. but green day has gone down the drain. they'll never be as good as they used to be 10 years ago and we cant change that. people have to get over the fact punk is dead. Maybe this is far from the album's release (A year and a few months) but anyone who says this album is bad seriously needs their head checked. this album is just great don't u think guys, i goto all the clubs and disco's and they play this now. even country/pop/techno heads like me rock out to this stuff. all the people who like this album are like me and love simple plan and good charlotte good job green day and could you sign my hello kitty diary at your next show I just listened to "Going To Pasalacqua" from 1039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours and I nearly cried knowing that this is who they are now. I liked them before they were trying to be so epic. Though I can't complain about them sinking Lookout, as sucky as it is, who among us would let unpaid royalties like that slide? I still don't see why this is so groundbreaking. yeah "im done with green day shangens was good" im done with green day shangens was good but this long drawn out overplayed and over rated cd isnt very good Hey, this is the same person. um... tracks 1-4 are some of the best on the album... which is why they're getting so much airtime... I just saw Green Day in concert on the American idot tour. No....the best rock opera ever will be the Who's Tommy. This is the definition of an Opera. Green Day only stole that idea and turned it into a gimmick and make it ten times shorter. crazytoledo now what he said was pretty good. Man im getting sick of this band. These guys have really tapped into the core of the green day melodies, harmonies and jsut song writing in general. Songs like Letterbomb, She's A Rebel, St. Jimmy and many others really show how Green Day should really sound. They have really grown musically and American Idiot shows the best of fast loud agressive green day, along with the softer, more heartfelt green day songs. The added musicians/ instruments on this not only makes the songs sound fuller but is perhaps a sign that the old skool green day style writing songs is predominately over. ewww...i don't mean to ba a little mean, but if you think about it, it is kind of gross how the kind of younger poeple to 'be in love with billie joe' becuase he is pretty old and married...lol -i don't mean this in a mean way, but its a little annoying when you read a review about the album, and a lot of people jsut say how hot a guy is...lol Not only is this the best album of the year BY FAR, it is also the best album put out by anyone for a log time. Every bit of it is excellent. Green Day is talented and if it weren't so offensive, I might like the album too. It seems like every interview I read B.J. Armstrong changes his own interpretation of his songs? It is supposed to be be this story but his explanation has evolved so much? I don't think this album would be half as popular if he didn't get on the Bush-hater-bandwagon. He grabbed his old fans along with the other misinformed music fledgings eager for some kind of stimulation. Nothing is wrong with their music but it is definitely not punk anymore, definitely more mature music though. Damn, I'm seeing a hell of a lot of assholes on either side defending this album however stupidly(green day kicks ass!! billie joe is so hot!), thinking it's not punk enough, or bashing it as bad music like there is some conspiracy that Green Day was whoring the underground scene and trying to become as bad as Nickelback or 3 doors down. A lot of you truly misunderstand the whole reason this album was made and assume the craziest shit. it was stupid enough when people were assuming that Anti-Flag were giving away their political stance and actions as well as integrity by signing to a major, like many 100's of good formally underground bands have; whole 'nother story but just as an example. Back to the subject though, a lot of the ignorant people("their old stuff was so much better they actually used to be punk, but now their some gay ass pop/boy band.")think this album is bad probably because they haven't listened to it the right way. greenday is the best I love greenday.......they r sooo awesome.....i give them a ten.......(even though it shows 7 stars...whats up with that?) I am happy you like dookie. I'm tired of all these discussions... Dookie is one of my favourite pop punk albums of the last decade, but every album after it has been a step backwards for the band. Granted, i think it's great that green day has stepped away from their punk rock side and trying something new, as it was getting very stale and boring, (see warning). Haven't really listened to this album, don't mind the singles, but it is very sad to see and hear them on mainstream TV, radio. fuck the 12 year olds with green day shirts and simple plan badges and trucker caps which read "punks no dead", fuck em', the fuckin fucks. Basically the way i see it is this guy is pissed at the government so he leaves and refers to himself as the jesus of suburbia since he grew up in this city. he meets st jimmy and whatsername who becomes his gf. "shes a rebel" and "shes an extraordinary girl" are about her. give me novacaine is because he just met this girl and she doesnt want him to be on drugs anymore (drugs made him think he was jesus of suburbia) hence "the jesus of suburbia is a lie" in are we the waiting but he is saying to give him the drugs. they break up in the end and he starts becoming upset during letterbomb and wake me up when sept ends and he decides to return home during homecoming, where he forgets about her during "whatsername" as a great ending. Is Tre Cool singing Rock and Roll Girlfriend part on homecoming??? I mean it soundz like him so i am asking i know its a dumb question but i still wanna know!!!! Damn fine CD. A vast improvment from "Warning", in my opinion. I love it. It's actually fast paced (for most of it) and aggressive! Like the old Green Day! St. Jimmy is nice. I love all GD albums, but this is amazing... it tells a huge, complex story that is always changing, with amazing, amazing, somewhat poetic, lyrics, and awesome instrumentals. Billie Joe used to write some amazing lyrics, seems like fame has crippled his talent. I've seen Green Day live three times and each time it's gotten progressively worse. He should concentrate on playing music rather than attempring to psyche-up the crowd by enciting 5 minute long chants. Musically it's alright, but I can't relate to this album lyrically. it sounds like a 12 year old scribbled this down.
