I hold the Lawrence Arms' Greatest Story Ever Told in very, very high regard. I believe it was a landmark for the Chicago trio once dismissed by some as inept Jawbreaker rehashing, as it found their wit reaching an ultimate pinnacle with sly pop culture references (who would think to coin "Povichian voyeurs?"), a stunningly varied collection of songs (everything from the slow and deliberate "Raw and Searing Flesh" to its brutally melodicore followup in "On With the Show"), and a gorgeously designed, thematically excellent layout complimenting an album already soaking in sociological observation and criticism via left-wing literature references. This is why Oh! Calcutta!, the band's first proper full-length in two and a half years, seems as if a strange, backwards progression for the band, but also as one that comes as they've sharpened their melodies and found a new, catchier-as-ever aggression about themselves; thus, it's an excellent album in its own rights.

Initial observers of Calcutta! will notice a musical style that may appear to be, as some will call it, "Falcon-esque;" Brendan Kelly formed a side project known as the Falcon a few calendar rotations back, seemingly in order to exercise demons inside himself wishing to write simple, raw, and moderately poppy punk rock songs. What's ironic is that the Lawrence Arms deliver this in spades on Calcutta! However, as they carry with themselves the experience of a unit that has been together for years, the album yields the highest quality that can result from such a formula. "The Devil's Takin' Names" and "Cut It Up" are the first two tracks on Calcutta!, and both provide enough hooks dangling with the bait to prove just how compelling and memorable things can get.

While separate variation doesn't seem to be Calcutta!'s strongest trait, it manages to retain interest track in and track out because that variation is contaminated inside those songs. Most every song is upbeat and fast-paced, but quick injections of thoughtful, reflective chords sporadically twinkle in between Kelly's gravel foundation-laying and Chris McCaughan's newly off-key but emphatic and smoother complementing vocals.

Most notable is the loss of distinction between "Brendan songs" and "Chris songs." Both vocalists sing on every track, often in unison, which makes for a number of powerful, singable choruses, such as "Beyond the Embarrassing Style," which brings the band's famously drunken live show to the disc with a hazy, slurred chorus of "your life revolves like a carousel / your hopes are buried in a wishing well / awake in a grave that you dug yourself / 'just keep on betting on that horse you love." Lines like these adorn Calcutta! enough to prove that the band has not lost their lyrical touch, either.

The Lawrence Arms record a surprise of a record in Oh! Calcutta!, drawing from their deep past for a sound that begs the live recreation, but assisted with the experience they've gained through bottomless bottles and careful observation of themselves and others. It's certainly a more obvious interpretation of punk rock than their preceding effort, but hardly one that fans will complain about having to embrace.

    My Score:

I am late getting into this band despite giving them a chance once every few months for the past 5 years, but am now starting to "get it", thanks to this album.

I really don't like the first two tracks that much, but every one after that (besides one or two) is simply great. I have been getting into their older stuff now and like it more than I used to... my problem was that I found it all too pointlessly fast and aggressive, without distinct emotion. Now that I have come to terms with the fact that they never meant to be anything more, I'm liking the music more.

Ha, the org loves the lawrence arms too much. I just skimmed over the comments and didn't see one negative one. Although I completely agree. Amaazing cd. this is flawless punk. I don't think they can top this cd ever. This is the sound that the majority of FAT punk bands have been trying to captue, and only TLA has perfected it.

Bought this album by accident, thought I was buying something else. It makes for decent background music. This album is alright to listen to while driving in your car or something, but I probably wouldn't sit and listen to this at home. I still don't know what band I thought the Lawrence Arms were, but this album wasn't a HUGE disappointment.

Lary33, actually I read an interview with Brendan Kelly, and he himself said it was a song about the warped tour and how he did not like the fact that the warped tour was backed by corporations and the fact that it ruined small venue turnout over the summer months. There are also lyrics in the song that say "Fuck the warped tour, mother fucker". I would say that is bashing the warped tour.

    Posted by Larry33 on 2007-01-17 21:38:18

Assgoblin, they arent bashing the Warped Tour necessarily from a fan's perspective, but more for the fact that the smaller bands that get to play the side stages really dont get much publicity since all the concert goers are flip flopping between the 2 mainstages all day. Who watches the Volcom stage when BR, NOFX, Rise Against, etc is playing elsewhere??

That being said I absolutely love the Lawrence Arms and this release definitely didnt disappoint.

    My Score:

Y'know I loved all of Brendan's previous projects (Slapstick, Broadways, Falcon) but previous couldn't get into TLA bc of the emo-ish songs and also BKs songs seemed kind of meaningless compared to his stuff from other groups. They were still good but..

Secondly, I think BKs best sound is from the Falcon EP which is one my top 5 favorite releases all time.

So anyway, before I digress, I've been going back and giving 06 releases I couldn't get into another shot and this was one of them.

I'm still not digging this as a whole although some of the tracks are good. But the bonus track Rabbit and Rooster is amazing, sounds straight outta the God Don't Make No Trash.

That Fat X-Mas comp that has it on it could be my favorite release of the year almost:

    -awesome Smoke or Fire preview
    -awesome Leftover Crack preview
-best song from Cuban Ballerina (special professional)
-pretty good song from Loved Ones, which means awesome song overall (maybe didn't have the oomph of some of the album songs)
    -great TLA track

the rest fucking rock too and maybe me want to revisit some bands I haven't gotten into before. The only one I didn't like was the Only Crime song but thats more bc I don't care for that style hardcore much.

This isn't my favorite Lawrence Arms album, but it is still pretty fucking good compared to other music that is being released these days. Suprisingly I like the new dual-vocal thing with Brendan and Chris. My favorite track on this album is the hidden-track at the end bashing the Warped Tour. I am proud to say that I have never gone to the Warped Tour and I never will

This is one of the better, if not the best punk album that came out this year. With bands that are normally good dropping the ball lately (Rise Against, Less Than Jake) its nice that one band seems to remain constant.

    My Score:

This is actually one of my favorite Lawrence Arms albums, but then again, that still puts it slightly behind Cocktails and Dreams and Greatest Story...and probably Apathy and Exhaustion. ...So if I had to divide my LA collection between the albums I really like and the albums I'm pretty indifferent to, it would be on the "albums I really like" section. Anyway, Oh Calcutta! just has some really great tracks on it. It's a nice progression for the band and lands far from a disappointment.

the second i heard "the greatest story ever told", the lawrence arms became damn close to being my favorite band.

that album helped me through so much bullshit going on in my life at the time. i really believe it helped pull me through.

therefore, i had such high expectations built up that i KNEW i would be disappointed.

    i wasn't.

this is the best, most cohesive album the larry arms have ever written, and in my opinion is completely underrated.

After a week of constant listening, I can now safely say that this album is outstanding. It's no "Greatest Story Ever Told" but it's still some of the best stuff these guys have done.

Does the opening drum beat of "Are You There Margaret?" remind anyone else of "Need You Around" by The Smoking Popes?

    Anyways:
    1. Greatest Story
    2. Oh! Calutta!
    3. Ghost Stories
    4. Apathy and Exhaustion
    5. Guided Tour of Chicago

It's a real toss up between 3 and 4 but I'm giving the nod to "Ghost Stories" becuase that is the record that made me fall in love with this band. Also, I can't include "Cocktails and Dreams" on the list since it's not technically an album and I'm straight up weird like that.

"Brenden sings the breakdown part in 'devils taking names' and then chris sings the 'but the devils takin names when the last curtain falls'. i've seen it live.

    paul"

That doesn't necessarily mean that's the way they sang it on the record. I completely agree that when I saw them last week, the way you say is the way they did it but they also did back and forth vocals on songs like Porno and Snuff Films and were frequently singing each others parts throughout the show.

Sidenote: They finally captured on this record one thing I've always loved about seeing them live, and that is the whole singing together thing. I'm not sure if this record is their best, but it's right up there and it just keeps getting better.

It's still a very good album though. The reviewer was right when he said it sounds "Falcon-esque". Brendan is really trying to stretch his voice and sometimes it just sounds flat out annoying.

Listened to this a dozen times and I just got it today. I must say being a Chicagoan my enjoyment of the record is upped immensely, it is a deceisively "chi" record, and not just cause of the art, although that helps. Thematically speaking the album has a lot going for it that just reminds me of the greatest city in the us of a.

    Same here.

I just got it this morning and had not heard a single song off of it before that. All this talk of "X record is better than Y" I think is kind of crap. Most people on here know that the three Fat releases (let's leave Cocktails out of this argument...) are the best. It may be on account of how this record was recorded (analog) but it sounds more "old school" than Apathy and totally different from Greatest Story. For this reason I think it's safe to say this band has released three straight full lengths that are all amazing in their own right, different but at the same time have enough continuity with each other to keep us fans happy.

Looks like ol father time is coming around, he now gives it a 7/10! Hey dipshit, the idiots who think all the bands on Fat sound like NoFX haven't heard Swingin Utters, Lawrence Arms, Soviettes, or Subhumans.

This record got me excited about music again..

    My Score:

it is what it is, get the cum off your face and out of your ears.." 10 outta 10" get real -oldpunker-

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, March 7, 2006 at 2:02 PM (EST)
    My Score:

This is a 10/10. Oldpunker needs to retire if he thinks this is "typical" Fat stuff.

    My Score:

Chris' vocals are too low, Brendan overpowers this record, I wnated a new Lawrence Arms record, not a new Falcon record.

Fuck this shit, might as well give it a zero because I doubt I'll ever choose to listen to this over Greatest Story or Apathy and Exhaustion

    My Score:

Under those trees/where the pigs lurk and crawl/there are bonfires and parties that are fucking them all/They give it by the inch and take it by the mile/it's one for the beating and it's two for the trial.

This is the best part on the entire album, hands down.

    My Score:

oh calcutta is a fantastic album. i think ghost stories is their best cd, but this is very close behind it. im glad chris went for the strained and desperate sounding vocals. i always loved that, especially on ghost stories, when his voice would crack or sound really harsh. so badass. he had me worried a little bit with that horrible country twang on the newer recorded songs on cocktails. what was up with that? anyone with me on this?

    My Score:

The album took a while to grow on me, but I'd definitely put it up with Greatest Story and Apathy. All three of those albums have been gang banging my cd player for the last month. "COUNT ALL YOUR FINGERS TONIGHT!!!" Someday in the future, that will not be in my head anymore...

I don't understand how the plryics stuff was so messed up. I could tell that some of that stuff was wrong when I only had the downloaded version.
The artwork is pretty cool. Not as good as the art on Apathy (which I absolutely love) or even Greatest Story, but sweet. Very apt to the nature of the album.

um...way to misquote the lyrics in the review, guy. it's 'just keep on betting on that horse you love', which is, to me, one of the best lines on the record

Brian obviously didn't do his homework and just used plyrics.com

When I got the CD on Friday I compared the lyrics in the booklet to the lyrics on plyrics.com and the web site was hilariously wrong on quite a few things.

I still don't get how you can confuse "'just keep on betting on that horse you love'" with something like "just keep on praying on that arm tonight"?!?

"First, why is there no Streetlight Manifesto review?"

Uh...because it's almost the exact same album?
