As humble of a band as we are, in the sense of our heritage and where we come from…I would not be sitting here if I didn’t think we were the greatest rock‘n’roll band in the world…On our day, nobody could touch us. Nobody…When Flogging Molly is on its game -- I’m sorry, but -- there’s not too many things that could touch that.-- Dave King, Flogging Molly, Whiskey on a Sunday In a sense, I have just spoiled the end of this movie, as this quote comes right before the credits, but what’s important about this DVD is not how it ends, but the story of the band, which comes in the hour and 45 minutes preceding this. At one point in this quote, Dave King even concedes that this may sound arrogant, but considering those watching the DVD are likely to be fans, it becomes more of a rallying statement for this band. It’s a fitting end, as the whole DVD is really a service to the fans. It was made just for them. Too many bands nowadays release their debut album and follow it up with remixes, acoustic versions, re-releases and live DVDs. They finally release another album and do it all again. (I’m looking in your direction, Linkin Park). The DVDs they finally do release are chalk full of sub-par live shots, intertwined with footage of bands acting like assholes backstage, music videos, and whatever else can be scrapped up to buy time between albums. Needless to say, many band DVDs are a huge disappointment. In complete contrast to this, Whiskey on a Sunday was billed as a feature-length documentary on the band, and that’s exactly what it is. It comes off as very well planned and tells the story of a great Irish punk band and how they came to be. The opening scared me just a little bit, as Flogging Molly’s members are talking to the cameras about the festival show that’s going to happen that night. Then some kick-ass live footage comes in, but it’s still looking like its treading on fairly standard grounds. As it turns out, this is just a quick opening, followed by the Whiskey on a Sunday title sequence. This is followed by fans attesting to why Flogging Molly is so great, and what makes them something special to the music scene. Throughout the rest of the DVD, live show sequences are intertwined, but it’s between the stories of Flogging Molly’s members. There is a section dedicated to each member, where they are helped in telling their own stories by other members commenting upon them as well. From silly and embarrassing moments, like King admitting his worst on-stage moment included something “brown” to dead serious interview portions that tell the stories behind the songs, you’ll definitely learn a lot about the band, with the guys behind SideOneDummy even stepping in to explain what they saw in Flogging Molly from the beginning. The DVD also documents the recording of Within a Mile of Home. A load of auxiliary footage accompanies the interviews, and live show sequences are shot well, and do a lot to help pace the DVD. All in all, if you’re a fan of the band, you’ll enjoy this DVD as much any of the albums you’ve come to love. The extra features further the experience, helping introduce fans to some of the behind the scenes people and just providing more footage of the band taken throughout the recording of this DVD. Almost all of it is as high quality as the main feature of the DVD; it’s basically just what had to be taken out to keep the main feature from being two and a half hours. The DVD is accompanied by a ten-track audio CD, which includes a new track called “Laura.” The new track is also featured on the Warped Tour 2006 comp and stands toe-to-toe with the best Flogging Molly has to offer. It also features a number of formidable acoustic recordings, and live tracks that are featured on the DVD. I made the mistake of listening to the CD before watching the DVD. In this context, I realized how brief it really is, and judging it as a CD release, it would be disappointing. However, considering it another extra to the main DVD feature, the CD does have quite a bit to offer. As previously stated, the new track is pure Flogging Molly gold. The acoustic tracks are all great recordings, and the live tracks are live tracks, but if you’re a big fan of Flogging Molly, they all add to the collection. In the end, I doubt many Flogging Molly fans really questioned the quality of this release, but if you were on the fence, it’s a safe buy. This is how bands should make their DVDs. DKM is ten times better than Flogging Molly First off I'm one of the biggest Pogues fans you'll will ever meet. I've seen both The Pogues and FM live, but that aside, when in the holy fuck did Spider Stacy ever fucking say that Flogging Molly was better than The Pogues. I would love to meet your dumbass. Flogging Molly music pales in comparison to the poetry of Shane MacGowan and The Pogues. What really pissed me off about this so-called "documentary" was FM didn't even recognize the importance of The Pogues on Celtic rock. I mean eight guys playing traditional instruments, hmmm where have I seen that before. All you FM fans need to get your facts straight before you start preaching. If you listen to The Pogues first three albums and then to a FM album, you'll realize who makes the better music of the two. POGUE MAHONE c'mon guys, a real punk wouldnt really care about moaning.... just let it go, you either like 'em or you dont! Haha, Spider Stacy from the Pogues even think Flogging Molly are a better band...and Dave doesn't have a fake accent you moron.......watch the dvd. Dublin Ireland born and raised.... Pogues are 1,000000 times better than this top o' the mornin' shite. ...of course AFI does kinda suck now. ....aw hell. you know most new school "punk" kids were the dorks in scholl that went to Hot Topic, bought some silly hair colour and clothes and thought they would fit in that way. They just hate it when a band becomes big and more than just "punks" listen to it. Look at AFI and Rise Against...they have took the same abuse from these brats. I thought this dvd was really moving. The guy/gal who said this is just a promo for the band obviously didn't see it. I personally believe Flogging Molly is the greatest band out there right now, and most certainly not a gimmick band. Watch the dvd and you'll see. Even if you're not a fan the dvd is most interesting. Ahahahah right on Scruffy!!! This review was pretty good, but here's how I'd make it better: Fuck this band, Id rather listen to oldies then this piece of dog shit, score is for the band and the review. The DVD is basically a 100 minute promo for the band, like most rockumentaries, but it's done in a good-natured manner. It's nothing special, definitely no "Instrument", just a nice way to get to know FM a little more. Dave King's story, however, is quite poignant and puts this above most other bands' films. Plus the CD is suprisingly good for a collection of scraps. Blah! Incoherent rambling! Rabble rabble rabble! I like exclamation marks! They help me get my point across! Thank you, punctuation gods! It was really a moving film and it showed how they conquered all of the negative shite that was said about them to become one of the biggest punk acts in the world. It also showed Dave seeing his mom for the first time in 8 years...she had a stroke and didn't recognize him! There is alot of mood swings in this documentary...it almost had me crying and it was also a celebration of a great band. i'm sorry, but i hate this band. The review is well-written, but, by the same token, absolutely horrible. It approaches it with the fawning reverence of the hipsters at Pitchfork, and then proceeds to describe the DVD with shitlicking terms that only people with band references in their name are allowed to use. More and more of the reviews on this site seem to be thinly veiled press releases, intended to sell records, as opposed to actually let kids know which discs are worthwhile. Who here wants to start a breakaway punk "news and reviews" site, which will focus only on bands that are "ok", and gives only middling or negative reviews? Regarding that first quote - I've seen 16 year olds playing in their first bands put on better stage shows than Flogging Molly. I think that somtimes these Irish-niche bands forget that they are basically playing an overproduced version of the same irritating music that the organ grinder guy with the monkey on a leash begging for change on the streets plays every day. They seem to think that playing a swing beat and singing about drinking is somehow rock n' roll and innovative. Its neither. Some of my friends who are fully content to listen to the radio and never seek out any different music have mixes featuring "Irish Drinking Song" alongside whatever panic at the disco song pete wentz is pimping at the moment. i really can't stand this band, or any bands like them. because The Dropkick Murphys arent a blatant Pogues rip off. I swear half the comments here were written by the same person. If you're going to try and shit on every irish punk band that isn't called 'The Pogues', why not shit on The Dropkick Murphys? or The Tossers? Blood or Whiskey are the best irish punk band. And I think the Pogues are namedropped way too goddamn much. Sure they were great, but get over it. Linkin Park > Flogging Molly I really like this band but, let's face it, they cannot match the Pogues. As someone else mentioned, there's nothing wrong with liking more than one band of the same style. Nonetheless, the Pogues had a lot more going on in their music than just the Irish influence. They incorporated music from all over the world and revved it up in their own style. That's where they outdid Flogging Molly. Spider Stacy was just being humble when he said FM are better. i dont like this band taht much, but the DVD was awesome. I like music, I dont like Linkin Park. I'd rather listen to Linkin Park than this Irish shit circus though. i liked them when they were called the pogues. fucking rip offs. The band formed pretty organicly, revolving around Dave King. dave went from palying solo to adding member by member based on what instrument they could offer and the people they are, not based on what their heritage is. You want some good celtic music check out 'Spirit of the West." They mix rock and folk into a beer drinking good time. One of the best bands ever to come out of BC. They won't change your life or anything, but damned if they aren't one of the most fun bands I've ever seen live. And their studio albums are always consistent. The ripw as at the fact that they release one album, then release a remix of that album and then finally another, then a live DVD and CD. It's a rip at putting out a ton of extra crap because they can't think of a new album. It has nothing to do with the quality of music. aside from genre ties Flogging Molly and The Pogues sound very little alike, get your ears checked. To say they are useless because The Pogues did it first that is like saying every american punk band is useless because The Ramones put out their record first. This band has always come off as rather gimmicky to me. I've been a bit hesitant to check out both Gogol Bordello and World Inferno because it sounds like they might become gimmicky too. There's nothing this band can do that the Pogues didn't do better twenty years ago. After the Pogues, there's no need for this type of band. You all talk about Whole Wheat Bread bragging about being black. Well what about these guys? This band is ridiculously fun live.
