The Tim Version are doing pretty typical fare here, that being upbeat, gruff punk rock in the tradition of Orgcore and No Idea Records, but with one key twist: Their singer is a friggin' rocket scientist. Seriously.

Okay, so that doesn't really actually affect the Tim Version musically, but hey, it's pretty neat, right?

I haven't heard the Tim Version's somewhat sizable back catalog, which comprises two full-lengths and a collections disc of 7"s, but this seems like it might be some of their better stuff. It's jovial, invigorating and has a teeny bit of Americana (Tom Petty-esque harmonica blowin' on "Murder") and rock 'n' roll going on. You can practically smell the whiskey splashing onto the floors of The Atlantic, while the drunken ballad "Too Many Saturday Nights" is probably already a live staple. "Paradise by the Fluorescent Lights" proves the dudes get can get pretty intense in the vocal department and still manage to have things sound like a supremely good time.

You know: Grabass Charlestons; Hot Water Music. What else can I really say?

Decline of the Southern Gentleman doesn't blow me away, but it sure caught my ear. Fun and familiar, you know what to expect and it's usually pretty decent.

    My Score:

this is a decent record but totally overrated. there is absolutely nothing new going on here at all.

    My Score:

Floridian band of the decade. Seriously. Y'all will be long dead when the greatness of The Tim Version is finally recognized, though. Bummer.

    fair enough, greendase.

as far as where to start with their music, i'd say the new album is probably the most cohesive and focused they've sounded. in a way it's leaps and bounds from their previous material. after 'decline...' i'd get either 'Prohibition...' or the new collection 'Still have the nerve to call themselves a band', then 'Creating Forces...' and lastly their assorted 7''s, splits, 10''s, etc.

please get ahold of a lyric sheet, this album is anything but jovial.

I have the lyric sheet. I think what I meant to say is it's musically jovial.

Is this a good place to start with these guys? I remember liking what I heard on their myspace or a stream of the album or something

    My Score:

honestly, my favorite album of the year so far. i've listened to this constantly since Russ gave me a burned copy a little bit before last year's Fest. it seems to be their most focused effort thus far and in my opinion blows their previous material out of the water. 'Dorsey writes non-fiction', 'Murder', 'Too Many Saturday Nights', their ever present last song get the friends together and drink jam 'League Minimum', an older song, reworked? 'Mark's Albatross' and it's a damn shame you left out the Replacements influence. Seeing a drunk Russ Van Cleave make a valiant attempt at 'Androgynous' on piano last night reaffirms that. lastly, please get ahold of a lyric sheet, this album is anything but jovial.

    My Score:

I only listened to this album once, a few months back, but I thought it was good with the exception of just one song (forgot the #), but it was fucking atrocious.
