Is originality really that important? On a site that mostly listens to bands that sound like Hot Water Music or Jawbreaker, I'd assume that it's not. Mr. Boddy, the four-track free EP by Mansions sounds a hell of a lot like Brand New and Manchester Orchestra, and to be honest it's really hard to care. After all, I like those bands, and neither of them have put out anything substantial this year anyway (Manchester's new EP only has two new songs). Something that sounds familiar, that will tide me over until the next release by either band, is definitely welcomed.

Vagina. Thing is though, on a large number of the reviews on this site, the albums reccomended at the bottom tend to be jawbreaker/hot water music/lawrence arms etc. It's not fair to generalise really, but y'know, sometimes it's right. I hate when people generalize the viewers on this site; it's almost as annoying as the ""I thought this was PUNKnews" comments. There plenty of people on this site who would rather listen to Converge than Hot Water music... or even I Set My Friends on Fire (why else would it have made the top list in October). On a site that mostly listens to bands that sound like Hot Water Music or Jawbreaker I picked this up when I saw the link here on punknews. It's definitely a good EP, the songs flow together really well (so well that I thought songs 2 and 3 were the same song before I actually watched the tracks change). It's free, so just download it. I do agree with the Brand New comparisons, especially with Mike Sapone's production. But I think his voice sounds more like John Nolan than anything, especially at certain moments. |
